Usually you have to perform up to a standard. If you go out there and sing like Kanye West when he did SNL (where it's so bad and pathetic that it's funny), people will know you suck live.
Usually if the artist has one good performance, it tells his/her audience that at least they are capable of doing well live (and this gives them hope that they will become consistant, so they remain fans). Believe it or not (I definitely can), not a lot of artists can even do that.
My favorite live was Robert Plant on Soundstage. His voice isn't as powerful as it used to be, but it still sounds amazing. One of the best for sure.
